High in the Menoreh Mountains, less than half an hour from the Borobudur, lies a small Catholic enclave. Java is predominantly Muslim and few people with a Catholic background live there. Yet this small place Java has become a place of pilgrimage.
The most visited is the statue of the Virgin Mary, placed from Europe in 1929. The word Sendangsono means source or pond under a tree. This is because next to the statue of the Virgin Mary a fountain with consecrated water comes from a cave.
In Sendangsono you can relax in a fairy-like atmosphere. It is very suitable to pray or meditate. You are not obliged to do so. Sendangsono is also open to lovers of culture and history. For people who have difficulty walking, there are sidewalks and stairs. You will also find toilets and resting places.
