The kraton, the sultan’s palace, is still a mighty place. Yokyakarta was and is inextricably linked to the sultan. And the sultan has his residence in the Kraton.

Until 1945 a sultan was a powerful man in Indonesia. Since then the sultans have increasingly been given a ceremonial role. Except in Yokyakarta. There the sultan is also governor for life. So not chosen, as in the rest of Indonesia.

The sultan also plays a role in the local religion. He ensures that the queen of the South Pacific and the guardian of the volcano remain satisfied, so that they protect Yogya.

At the palace there are crate dances every Sunday between 11.00 and 12.30 hours.
