Imogiri means holy necropolis and is a royal cemetery. Out of respect for the dead, you must wear a sarong that you can rent on the spot. Imogiri is very impressive.

A long staircase with almost 400 steps leads to a large old Javanese gate. Behind the gate is the tomb of Sultan Agung, the founder of the complex in 1645. You may enter, as long as you do not take pictures. Are you immobile? Then you can also take the car upstairs. That is more than worth it. Just because of the beautiful view.

Imogiri is open to the public on Sundays and Mondays from 10:00 to 13:00 and on Fridays from 13:30 to 16:00. To experience the whole ceremony it is best to be present half an hour in advance.
